The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild Review

Freedom changes everything

Breath of the Wild (BOTW) is like no other Zelda game you could imagine. Gone are the linear dungeons, gone is the hand holding, gone is the ‘we give you an item in this dungeon and now you gotta use it in this dungeon’.

Breath of the Wild is now a ‘go anywhere. do anything in any order you wish’ kind of game. There is so much to see and do in the almost post-apocalyptic world of Hyrule that may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get to grips with the freedom you have, the game becomes a major time sink to find and do everything.

For example, while it would be very ill-advised, you can go straight for Ganon from the get-go, although you would easily get destroyed in no time. The best tip I can advise – although everyone’s play style is different – is turn off the mini map and just explore. You never know what you’ll find.

Time wasting of the greatest stature

I’ve easily sunk in 40-50 hours and barely even touched the main story, I’ve been on a collect-a-thon and just exploring the entire world, messing around with powers that I have to see all the inventive and creative ways I can kill a bokoblin, whether it be with my own weapons, special powers or the environment.

It’s a game that I’ve felt like I’ve had the most amount of freedom with, even against other open world games of a similar ilk such as Skyrim. Being able to do what I want, when I want creates a sense of relaxation, which helps the game flow better.

Stories of the Hyrule kind

The number of different stories that I’ve heard from other players on how they have gone about completing a shrine (the game’s version of temples, which there are a lot more of than the standard 7 or 8) from using the powers you gain and not completing it in the way that was devised to just speedrunning through it, with each story I hear there’s always something different and for a game that’s been out for over a year, that’s a major accomplishment.

Star struck Gaming Rating

While some original Zelda fans may stop short because of the above, if they do, they’ll be missing out on one of the best games of 2017. The way Link controls, to how beautiful the world looks and all your different play style options earn Breath of the Wild all the plaudits and awards that it has got and so rightly deserved.
